Philosophy is Practical

Greetings!

Our first few lectures allowed us to enter into the vast world of philosophy via its different disciplines (i.e. epistemology, metaphysics, logic, etc). We saw how it addresses a variety of questions, the mystery of the world, and how it even arises out of the depths of our being when we are confronted with death!

This week I would like for you to consider and respond to the following question:

How do you think philosophy is useful/practical in today's world.

This question requires some thought; don't rush through it. Your response should be no less than 3-4 sentences. Remember, you are graded on how well thought out your response is!

Due date: 18th (Friday)

Good luck!

Prof. Terry

  2. Philosophy is not only useful and practical in today’s world but essential to every individual who desires to utilize each extremity in their organism thus ultimately, achieve the best life imaginable which pertains to their unique soul. If someone was to say, philosophy is worthless or perhaps irrelevant simply means that, that person is ignorant of the power and enlightenment that the “love of wisdom” brings, which suggests that the person wishes to remain in the dark consumed by ignorance. In the first day of class you stated that some people become scared of philosophy. No shit! (not in offense but in agreement) because their scared of the truth! That immediately brings me back to Plato’s Book VII of the Republic: the Allegory of the Cave. Basically, Socrates is talking to Glaucon and illustrating to him about the greatness of what it is like to be a seeker of; knowledge, wisdom and truth. One of the major motifs are the imperfections of being a lover of wisdom and the opposing, a fearful mind full of ignorance. If you are a lover of wisdom you are faced with harsh truths and realities which will ultimately make you a stronger person. If you are a living a comfortable happy life and are skeptical to explore the truth which can be ugly, cruel, and shocking you will forever dread philosophy which brings light to all that is concealed!

  3. Philosophy is essential in todays society because there are many things going on that has questions that need to be answered. You cannot live your life today without questioning it because that is not living your life the way you should, but how society wants you to live your life. We need philosophers today to question life and pass down their wisdom and experiences to the next generation so they can live their life to its fullest potential. Its like the professor said You have to know yourself and the truth before you can pass down your wisdom because wisdom without a clear mind and conscience is not beneficial to the individual who needs it.

  4. Philosophy asks the big questions to life's constant mystery, so even in today's society with all the technology and science we have come to know, there are still many things we as humans do not know yet. Philosophy is important even now to constantly push ones self to question life and question all the things that we do not have the answers to. I do have concerns that although it is important to apply philosophy to our lives, more and more people tend to accept not knowing or believe the hype; being content in such, which is not a good habit for us as humans to get into. This too proves why philosophy is necessary in today's society; nobody wants a world where we think we know it all, walk around as if we know it all and yet reality is that we know nothing and I could only imagine that that will not work in our favor.

  5. Philosophy is important in today's society. Philosophers try to find the answers to the questions that we may ask ourselves everyday. Without philosophers we will be lost in a world of questions and thoughts about how we should have done things or why didn't we do it this way. They say we don't think philosophical until we are met with death. But why can't we think philosophical before approaching death.

  6. Philosophy is part of our lives without many people knowing. It is useful because it teaches everyone to ask questions about life and it's purpose. It is practical because as we ask questions about reality, death, God, soul and the mind we are putting philosophy into use. Philosophers teaches us the "love for wisdom" and the more we learn, the more practical it becomes in today's world.

  7. Philosophy is the original art of studying. There are many ways to look at how philosophy is useful today. Philosophy, whether we realize it or not, impacts our everyday decisions and we encounter events everyday that requires it. Philosophy could be used through its branches such as ethics; thinking whether he/she should steal this item or through aesthetics; thinking if that broken statue on the fountain is beautiful. Philosophy also plays a huge role in different professions from law to science to business in terms of ethics, and it helps you create logical arguments in terms of logic. Philosophy, in one way can be useful to people who want to seek answers beyond the surface of the world, look at the world other than through money and power.
There is just too much to type on exactly how useful philosophy is in today’s world because the subject itself is so broad, but these are just some of my ideas on how I feel it is important, not only useful.

  8. Philosophy is a study of invisible things. It makes me study for not only spirit but also why I and the world exist. Those are the questions that science can not solve. The purpose of studying is the quest of truth and apply science to daily life. In terms of that, science can not satisfy both of purposes. Therefore we should study philosophy for searching for the truth. There are numerous questions that science can not resolve in today's world such as 'why should I be moral?.' From this perspective, philosophical activities make us bring up the foundation of our life and an outlook on the world. So, philosophy is useful and practical tool for self-reflection, raising the power of judgment and ablility to think.

  9. I think philosophy is very pratical in our society today. It is in our commercials, our music, and even our conversations with our friends. It help to shape us into the people we are, and should want to be like.

  10. Life is philosophy and its in any given field of work. No matter which walk of life you're from, you will always ask philosophical questions and its essential to do so. Philosophy is what makes us ask ourselves monumental questions for growth, wisdom and to have a true sense of self. It goads you to explore whats beyond the surface in finding true purpose.

  11. Philosophy is important today because it ask a lot of questions that people really need to sit back and think about. It makes you question the essence of what you believe in and if you truly do believe in that particular thing: Then why? It makes you question your idea of what is right and wrong. Does your view of ethics apply only when we are judging others but when it comes to ourselves we find a way to excuse those same ethics we apply to others. My favorite thing about Philosophy is not only do we question others but we question ourselves and we find out things about ourselves that we may not have known existed if we did not ask those questions. philosophy is all about learning and engaging ourselves with others because maybe through others we may see some aspect of ourselves. 12. Philosophy is the analytical, sustained, and reflective thinking about concepts and beliefs (in any subject). It allows for a variety of different thoughts and allows one to make reasonable judgement. The tools of philosophy can be important to everyone because it potentially helps one think better, more clearly, and with greater perspective about almost everything. Philosophy helps deal with life's mystery and dwells on the questions of life and being. It provides wisdom and a sense of one self. That is why philosophy is useful in todays world. Gynel Kasumova

  13. Philosophy is useful in today’s world because the moment you start thinking you begin using philosophy and if more people understand and used philosophy the world would be less ignorant place. Without philosophy I believe the world would be full of chaos. In addition, Philosophy also helps individual better understand them self, with questions they might have for example what’s purpose of life or does god existence. Philosophy might not give you those answers but thinking about them is important.

  14. I think philosophy is useful in today's world in many ways. It helps us figure out what goals we want to pursue in life and how we plan to accomplish them. Philosophy helps form the many governments that we have in society. It brings aspects from all over opening the minds of people exposing all sorts of new ideas and important issues. To me philosophy is what keeps people occupied.

  15. Philosophy is both useful and practical in today’s world because it fits in to every facet of our lives. It forces us to confront the “why” and the morality of what we do in life and how we treat others around us. For example without Philosophy there would be no base for a structured government and it’s laws. In law you can see where Philosophy plays out. From the beginning with the signing of the Declaration of Independence as the colonist were fighting and demanding their release from Britain’s rule it also gave them the realization that what they were doing to the slaves was being done to them, (but obviously not with the same amount of violence). As the colonist fought for their freedom the moral implications of this fight also led to the abolishment of slavery, because one can’t ask to be treated fairly and just without doing the same. In today’s law we have the death penalty which still conflicts with many people’s moral values. Yet, as one might ask, “Is it moral to kill a person who has murdered this man” because Philosophy teaches us to look inward at ourselves and outward at the universe so in a sense that it may always be “balanced”. If that murderer killed 7 infants then for those 7 lives is that never fully grew and experienced worth halting this man at his prime in life so that he can fee l their pain. Then again, what if the murderer was a 12 year old? Philosophy, forces us to ask questions about our everyday life not just in law but in relationships, buying a home, education because Philosophy teaches us that our actions not only affect us but also the people around us.

  16. Philosophy is the love of wisdom. Wisdom is never obsolete; so is philosophy. Today philosophy doesn't seem to be the most practical field compared to science or technology but its necessary to keep in mind that philosophy was the ground of science and its derivatives.Philosophy remains useful today because humanity still has the dark cloud of questions hanging upon its head. Questions of existentialism, metaphysics and ethics are more recurrent than ever now that the world 's been facing so many catastrophes. How to explain incessant wars in the Middle East, repetitive natural catastrophes. science nor technology haven't yet answered those questions. Philosophy is a living field because humans are constantly in quest and in doubt. philosophy in anthropologically grounded and humans have not yet disappear so philosophy is still needed . S. Joseph

  17. Philosophy is essential in ones life because it allows your personal life to be in check by various questions and beliefs. On a basic level philosophy allows one to obtain information as to WHY people live the way they do. On a much higher level, it addresses issues concerning atheism, morals and if there is a supreme being. Without philosophy, where would our standards of living come from? This is why philosophy is important in today's society.

  18. I think philosophy is practical because it's the basis of every day life.We use philosophy every day and apply it in little ways. It causes us to ponder about certain subjects and create a better understanding OF that subject. Our very morals, beliefs and way of life are driven by philosophies. If you have a belief system, a way of thinking, or an outlook on life, then you're applying it.
